It’s been 40 days since Queeny buried her son, Ordell, who was shot and killed by a police officer. 40 days of protest. 40 days of grief. 40 days of constant, unrelenting rain. And after 40 days of neighbors promising, “if there’s anything you need…,” Queeny now realizes what that is. A play of mothers and sons, sisters and boyfriends, lemons and plums, Cactus Queen is about burials—the kind that happen year after year after year. Isn't it time, finally, for something to grow?
